As a minority overseas for much of my upbringing has left me with a desire to connect with black legacies and histories. By participating in this project I have learned a wealth about the rich history of Black folks in Montreal, stories that will leave me inspired for years to come. I greatly enjoyed the opportunity I had to speak with and interview such prominent individuals.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">-Joseph Ariwi<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThe &#8220;Standing on Their Shoulders\u201d project seeks to uncover black anglophones\u2019 hidden history through storytelling and visuals. It is our way of celebrating our achievements as a people and giving a voice to a community that has been marginalized out of history. We understand that knowledge of self is key to the growth and unity of black youth in Montreal and beyond.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">-Yanissa Grand-Pierre<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cWe felt that this was an important project to take part in because there isn&#8217;t as much recognition for the people who have worked so hard to get Little Burgundy to where it is as there should be. My sister and I chose Jesse Maxwell-Smith because we found that her story was inspiring and that accomplishments like hers are something to strive for. We are extremely thankful that the Standing on Their Shoulders project gave us an opportunity to learn more about our community and someone who helped shape it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">-Rachel Shelton<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cStanding on Their Shoulders is a bridge, in my eyes, to the past in Montreal. They taught me so much about the undiscussed history of Montreal&#8217;s Black Community.
