Call for Research Interns<\/strong>
\nLiving History: 100 Years of Black History, Culture and<\/em>
\nHeritage<\/em><\/p>\n

Black immigrants have made significant cultural, artistic, and social contributions to
\npresent-day Montr\u00e9al; however, this history is often overlooked and rarely told. By collecting
\nand sharing the memories of our oldest community members, the Living History project seeks to
\npreserve Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Black anglophone history by highlighting the voices of those individuals
\nwho helped to create it.
\nProject Goals
\nBeginning in the early 1900s with the burgeoning Saint Antoine district, Living History
\nwill trace the development of Montreal\u2019s Black community through significant institutions, like
\nthe Negro Community Centre, and artistic innovations, such as jazz. The project then turns to the
\nincreased immigration of the later 20th century, exploring its political and cultural ramifications
\nin events such as the Sir George Williams Affair and celebrations like Caribbean Carnival.
\nUltimately, Living History will celebrate the diversity of Montreal\u2019s Black English-speaking
\ncommunity, while also emphasizing the cooperative work of our predecessors in creating the
\nMontr\u00e9al we see today.
\nWith the support of Heritage Canada, Living History will create 15 memoryscapes of
\nsites, organizations, and landmarks of cultural and historical significance to Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Black
\nanglophone community. These oral histories will enable listeners to experience the hidden
\nhistory of a place by listening to the memories of its past and present inhabitants. We are
\ncurrently seeking 15 Black youth to be responsible for the creation of these memoryscapes.
\nLiving History is an opportunity to learn about our past while leaving a documented history for
\nfuture generations.<\/p>\n

Term<\/strong>: December 2018-June 2019<\/p>\n

Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Black youth (age 16-35)
\n– English speaking (necessary)
\n– French speaking (an asset)<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/strong>
\n– Time commitment of 2 to 10 hours per month of the internship
\n– Attendance at 8 Living History workshops (included in monthly time commitment)
\n– Conducting 2 oral interviews with community members
\n– Creation of an audio-recorded memoryscape
\nSkills and Experience Gained from Internship
\nParticipants cannot receive financial remuneration for their internship. However, they will
\ndevelop a transferable set of skills valuable for future academic and professional endeavors.<\/p>\n

These skills include:
\n– Research Experience<\/strong>
\nInterns will be guided through in-depth research of their chosen topic. They will
\nbuild familiarity with the resources offered in libraries, while also developing the
\nskills to understand both primary and secondary historical sources.
\n– Archival Expertise<\/strong>
\nInterns will receive specialized training in archival research and archival practice.
\nOne workshop will be dedicated to an understanding of the archival process and
\nthe development of necessary skills for the location and interpretation of archival
\nsources.
\n– Oral Interviewing<\/strong>
\nInterns will receive specialized training in oral history and oral interviewing.
\nMultiple workshops will be dedicated to the ethical considerations and
\ninterviewing techniques used by oral historians. Interns will build familiarity with
\nthe tenants of oral history, while also developing the skills of cross-generational
\ncommunication.
\n– Audio Production<\/strong>
\nInterns will receive specialized training regarding the digital production of MP3
\nfiles. Multiple workshops will be dedicated to the creation and editing of these
\naudio files, focusing both on the technical expertise of production and on vocal
\ntraining for effective narration.
\n– Networking and Outreach<\/strong>
\nInterns will become familiar with tools used in community outreach and
\norganization. Additionally, interns will build relationships with community
\nmembers, participating institutions and academic professionals.<\/p>\n
